Hives

Causes, Effects, Treatments, and Prevention

Hives are raised, itchy welts that appear on the skin. They can appear suddenly and disappear just as quickly, or they may last for weeks or even months. Hives can be caused by a variety of factors, including:

  • Allergic reactions: This is the most common cause of hives. Allergens such as food, medication, insect bites, or latex can trigger the release of histamine in the body, which leads to the development of hives.

  • Infections: Viral or bacterial infections can sometimes cause hives.

  • Autoimmune diseases: In some cases, hives can be a symptom of an underlying autoimmune disease, such as lupus or dermatomyositis.

  • Physical factors: Pressure on the skin, sunlight, exercise, or even extreme changes in temperature can trigger hives in some people.

Effects of Hives

The main effect of hives is itching. The welts can also be painful or burning. In some cases, hives can also cause swelling of the lips, tongue, or eyelids (angioedema).

Treatments for Hives

The treatment for hives will depend on the underlying cause. In most cases, over-the-counter antihistamines, such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl) or loratadine (Claritin), can help to relieve the itching. In more severe cases, prescription medications, such as corticosteroids, may be necessary.

  • Antihistamines: These medications block the effects of histamine, which helps to reduce itching and swelling.
  • Corticosteroids: Corticosteroids can be used to reduce inflammation and swelling. They may be taken orally, applied topically to the skin, or injected.
  • Cool compresses: Applying cool compresses to the affected area can help to relieve itching.

Preventing Hives

If you know what triggers your hives, you can often prevent them by avoiding those triggers. For example, if you are allergic to peanuts, you will need to avoid eating peanuts and foods that may contain peanuts. Keeping a diary of your symptoms and potential triggers can help you identify what is causing your hives.

Here are some additional tips for preventing hives:

  • Wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing.
  • Avoid hot showers and baths.
  • Apply cool compresses to itchy areas.
  • Manage stress.

If you experience hives that last for more than six weeks, or if you have hives along with other symptoms such as fever, wheezing, or difficulty breathing, it is important to see a doctor to determine the underlying cause and get appropriate treatment.
